Weekend Immersion Workshops - Circus Events - CircusTalk
Join us for a weekend deep dive into your favorite apparatus and take home skills that will keep you busy long after the workshop ends. Find more info below and here:

Catch and Release on Rope & Fabric with Teo Spencer

WHEN: Sept 18-19, 2021
Sat 12 - 3 pm & 4 - 6:30 pm; Sun 10 am - 1 pm & 2 - 4:30 pm

Tackling release moves on rope and fabric can be daunting. Knowing how to fall on a mat is essential. Using momentum and good body mechanics rather than force makes release movements fun. We'll give you the tools to confidently train these skills on your own and the information you need to begin catching consistently and comfortably. We'll have a FOAM PIT! and a pit mat to make it all a little easier, so bring your brave self and see what you can accomplish. When you need a break from release material we'll roll through a catalogue of movements that Teo has created in collaboration with other artists and finds inspiring.

PREREQUISITES: Minimum experience includes having clean, straight arm beats on rope or fabric, being physically ready to land on a mat, on your back from five feet and being ready to rock and roll. 18 & up (or permission of instructor)

COST: $350 ($325 early bird discount before Aug 27)

Aerial Sling with Lauren Breunig

WHEN: Sept 25-26
Sat 12 - 3 pm, 4 - 6:30 pm & Sun 10 am - 1 pm, 2 - 4:30 pm

Looking to reignite your love for sling, or just want to keep expanding your repertoire? This weekend aerial sling immersion will inspire you on your aerial journey with playful sequencing, guided exploration, and a supportive environment. You will learn twisty transitions, creative choreography, and fundamental technique, as well as tools for adapting your knowledge of other aerial apparatuses to this fabric loop.

PREREQUISITES: Students attending this workshop should be at an intermediate level on any aerial apparatus (sling experience is encouraged but not required). Students should be able to execute at least three inversions in the air with good form, and do 2 pull ups. 18 & up (or permission of instructor)

COST: $350 ($325 early bird discount before Sept 11)

Circus Story Telling with Stephanie Abrams

WHEN: Oct 23-24
Sat 12-6 pm & Sun 10 am - 4 pm

Find the layers of expression and storytelling that elevates your circus performance into something unforgettable. This workshop is designed to help experienced circus artists dive into theatrical work and learn to use their skills to tell complex and narrative stories on stage. Participants will explore mime and physical theatre and apply those techniques directly into their skill work in their chosen focus discipline.

PREREQUISITES: Students should be working at a high intermediate or advanced level in their focus area discipline. You must be proficient in your focus discipline - capable of warming up, training on your own and performing 4-5 min of material in sequence a few times a day. It doesn't have to be complicated with crazy skills - just something with a series of sequences that you can run a few times in the workshop. Please indicate when you register what discipline you'd like to focus on in the workshop. 18 & up (or permission of instructor)

COST: $350 ($325 early bird discount before Oct 2)

Hand Balancing with Chris Gatti
WHEN: Nov 5-7
Fri 5:30 - 8:30 pm; Sat 10 am - 1 pm, 2 - 4 pm; Sun 10 am - 1 pm

Expand your handstand practice in both breadth and depth with an instructor who is truly in love with the art of standing on your hands. This workshop will begin with a focus on refining foundational and essential technical aspects of the handstand. We will then explore a variety of topics including: positions and movement, handstand-related flexibility, artistic expression, restoration techniques, one arm handstands, and strengthening exercises to develop a well-rounded handstand practice. Additional topics may be included depending on the interest of the participants

PREREQUISITES: This workshop is suitable for intermediate and advanced handbalancers that regularly train handstands. Participants should be able to consistently perform a 30 second freestanding handstand (unspotted, no wall), and should have at least a 1 minute handstand against the wall.
18 & up (or permission of instructor)

COST: $350 ($325 early bird discount before Nov 15)

Chinese Pole with Brooke Locke

WHEN: Nov 12-14
Fri 5:30 - 8:30 pm; Sat 4 - 6:30 pm & 7 - 8:30 pm; Sun 10:30 am - 12:30 pm & 1 - 3 pm

Gravity defying. Floating transitions. Effortless power. These are hallmarks of the traditional circus art form that is now the highlight of many contemporary circus performances. In this deep dive into the Chinese pole with instructor Brooke Locke, you'll work on new entrances for slides and dynamic baby, conditioning for handstands and flags, and more. With two 20' rubberized poles, a custom pole mat and a pit mat, you'll have the space and the equipment to practice new skills and sequences. Each class will begin with stretches and exercises to prepare the body for the rigors of this apparatus, and each class will end with a cool down and body maintenance work to keep your body healthy.

PREREQUISITES: Participants must be able to climb the pole 3 times in a row, have an understanding of basic slides, and be working on handstands from the floor or kicking up on the pole. Either dance pole or Chinese pole experience are suitable. Please dress in layers that include stretchy jeans with leggings underneath, a belt without a metal buckle to keep them from falling down, a long sleeve shirt, and smooth-soled shoes. We suggest Feiyue Martial Arts Shoes. 18 & up (or permission of instructor)

COST: $350 ($325 early bird discount before Oct 22)

Tight Wire with Sarah Tapper

WHEN: Dec 3-5
Fri 5:30 - 8:30 pm; Sat 12-3 pm, 4-6 pm; Sun 10 am - 1 pm

Walking the wire can often be a solitary experience so don't miss this chance to meet, learn, and create with fellow funambulists and work with tight wire dancer and coach Sarah Tapper. We will have several wires rigged at various heights so that you can try out new things down low and work on perfecting the skills you already have at 4' or 6'. Sarah will lead participants in group warmups, solo wire, and some partner work as well as theory of balance and problem solving techniques. Most of the weekend will be spent coaching individuals at whatever level they are currently at and guiding them towards the next level.

PREREQUISITES: Participants must have a solid foundation and experience on the wire and should be able to cross forward, backward, turn, etc without falling off the wire. Bring your wire shoes and fans (if you use one)! 18 & up (or permission of instructor)
