Aaron Marquise Isn’t Clowning Around With Circus Vision

One midweek night last December, the board of directors of the Contemporary Circus and Immersive Arts Center sat with Aaron Marquise, the organization’s founder and executive director, to discuss the company’s future.

Established with the CCIAC name in 2019 as an evolution of the circus-based entity under which Marquise had been presenting shows in the Collar City since 2014, the nonprofit had suffered during the pandemic. It struggled to fulfill its mission of putting on its own original work, showcasing other contemporary circuses (think Cirque du Soleil, not Ringling) and hosting residencies for circus artists to develop new material.

But CCIAC brought crowds to Prospect Park last summer for performances by the Brooklyn-based Hideaway Circus, and city officials and business owners alike were supportive, appreciating that the young company had chosen Troy to create a niche that didn’t previously exist in the Capital Region arts scene. … Link to full length article at the TimesUnion.
