Barbican Vows to Stamp Out Racism After Damning Report Into Discrimination

More than 120 allegations of discrimination – with about a third relating to racism – have been investigated as part of an external review into the operations of the Barbican Centre in London, the findings of which have been published today.

The investigation – carried out by legal firm Lewis Silkin – has made recommendations to the Barbican’s board about how to take forward several allegations raised in the report, with the arts centre’s new executive director of HR tasked with taking disciplinary action where appropriate.

The review was ordered by the City of London Corporation, which is the founder and principal funder of the Barbican, in the summer. It was launched after the publication of Barbican Stories – detailing accounts of discrimination experienced by current and former staff at the centre.

The City of London Corporation has now published the report, which included interviews with 35 people. One in five respondents were people of colour, and about a third of complaints related to racism.
