Circus and Changing Realities 2020 –Adaptation & Sustainability in Circus

Welcome to Circus and Changing Realities 2020–A Series of Virtual Dialogues about the Future of CircusThis episode is titled Adaptation & Sustainability in Circus.

For this panel, the moderators considered Jem Bendell’s work on Deep Adaptation using what he calls the four r’s (resilience, relinquishment, restoration and reconciliation) to explore what we can do differently in the face of the coming climate catastrophe. How they framed these questions for circus:

  • What about circus do we really want to keep and how do we keep it?

  • What can we let go of? What might we have to let go of and how can we make peace with that?

  • Are there things about circus that we can say good riddance to?

  • What might we want to add or change?

  • What are some aspects of circus that we don’t see much of that could be beneficial if implemented more widely?

  • Are there things from circus past that would be beneficial to revive?

  • How might we prepare circus artists differently for the future?
