Circus Oz is about to get tumbled.
New artistic director Rob Tannion has taken charge of the trapeze and he’s planning to swing it in some devilish directions.
Family fare? There will always be that. But he’d like to add a dash of darker stuff in the Spiegeltent and maybe a more immersive festival show.
“The company is at a point where it’s looking for a change; fresh air, fresh ideas, new thoughts,” says Tannion, who comes to Melbourne after 23 years living in Europe and creating circus shows all over the world.
“For a very long time Circus Oz has been running as a one-show, one-ensemble model — create a show, tour a show, then create a new show,” he says.
“I’m very interested in relooking at that and working on a more portfolio approach, so there are multiple shows with a wider range of artists.”
