Silvia Dopazo Hilario – Aerialist

Silvia Dopazo performs a deep overspilt on a pair of purple aerial silks against a gray backdropSilvia Dopazo is an expert aerialist who specializes in duo straps, corde lisse, and aerial silks. She is originally from Galicia, Spain. There she trained in rhythmic gymnastics, beginning at the age of 7, and even represented Spain in the AGG World Championship in 2008. Dopazo was a rhythmic gymnast for 13 years. She showcased her solo rope act in the Budapest International Circus Festival. She has worked for companies like Cirque du Soleil, and debuted in their show La Forge Aux Etoiles in France. She went on to be featured in Cirque’s Sonor and Viaggio. One of the biggest highlights of her career was performing aerial silks, chains, and bungees in Axel. Dopazo’s main training takes place on silks and rope, however she works on aerial technique on straps. She favors dynamic movements and describes her style as “a combination of contortion and flow with beats and swings melted with strong positions on the air.”

In an interview with Silvia Dopazo, we asked her what the most rewarding part of being an artist is, to which she responded:

“The most rewarding part of performing is to be able to express myself in the best way I know, reaching people doing what I love the most. It is rewarding to feel the reaction of the audience, the screams when I drop the wow when I can transmit the danger of the height and the beauty of the aerial performance.”

We also asked Dopazo how she incorporates elements of contortion into her act and performance. She replied:

“I incorporate the contortion trying to connect one movement to the other, I never do a contortion position if there isn’t a connection with the performance or with what I want to transmit, because my background is rhythmic gymnastics I like to use what I learned since I was 7.”
