Circus Has 300 Jobs on Offer as Touring Big Top Extravaganza Heads to Newcastle

Showbiz tours invite people to ‘run away to the circus’ as they bring 300 job opportunities ranging from behind-the-scenes technicians to acrobats and dancers.

The lure of circus life could seem extra tempting to those looking for an escape after months of lockdown and there are 300 jobs now available with touring shows which are heading to the North East this summer.

John Haze, who is director of three leading circuses – Circus Extreme, Circus of Horrors and Circus Berlin – which will be back this year after the pandemic wiped out most of 2020’s plans, is inviting locals to ‘run away to the circus’ .

And he says that the huge range of jobs available for the tour could lead to permanent roles.

“I love the North East” said John who has built up a long-running relationship with the region over the years with shows hosted at the likes of Tyne Theatre and the Town Moor.

His circus performers, who come from around the world, are now reunited again as they begin rehearsing for their three upcoming tours, two of which have North East dates.

Daredevil show Circus Extreme, featuring aerial feats and motorbike stunts, is returning to the Town Moor in Newcastle from June 11-27 and, ahead of that, The Circus of Horrors will be making its first ever visit to Rainton Arena in Houghton-le-Spring on May 22. “We’re very much looking forward to that,” says John.

The performers’ rehearsal process now involves social-distancing, mask-wearing and rules requiring each circus troupe to stick to its own bubble – but they’re back together and that’s what matters.

“We’re happy,” says John. “We haven’t seen some of our best friends for six to seven months.”

He added: “We need more people so if there are people out there in Newcastle, if they want to run away to join the circus, this is their chance.

“There are lots of different jobs available.”

They’re looking for a singer, dancers – even acrobats – but the new posts also include box office and front-of-house staff, lighting and sound technicians, drivers and tent technicians to join tour at the end of May.

It will involve a seven-month contract – but it doesn’t necessarily have to end then and could lead to an entire lifestyle change.

After the devastating impact of last year, the performers can’t wait to get back to work which for them means the kind of aerial feats and extraordinary stunts they have become renowned for in such shows as Circus Extreme which was last in Newcastle in 2019, earning a five-star review.

The Covid crisis hit just as they were celebrating their 25-year anniversary and put paid to a special Circus of Horrors performance due to take place as part of Glastonbury festival.

“That would have been a massive thing but it all got cancelled,” said John.

“We’d sold out Newcastle and we were to go into theatres, then lockdown happened. That was a nightmare…
