Circus Sessions Set to Fly High at New Welland Arts Space

A weeklong creative experiment will come to life in front of an audience Saturday night in Welland.

Femmes du Feu Creations, a group formed in Toronto about 20 years ago and which recently relocated to Welland, will host Circus Sessions.

The performance involving nine artists is not a traditional circus show with a big top tent, but a contemporary one that allows performers to “work through the creative process and see the fruits of their experiments,” said Holly Treddenick, artistic director for the group.

“It’s different than seeing a show that’s been worked on for a year or two years,” said Treddenick, who works closely with Welland Downtown BIA, is a founder of Welland Creatives Network and also sits on the city’s arts and culture advisory committee.

The audience will get a chance to “watch an experiment unfold,” she said.

“The audience gets a better understanding of circus art than they would from seeing something really slick or polished,” she added.

There will be aerial components to the show, and use of a Cyr wheel, an acrobatic apparatus that consists of a large ring made of aluminum or steel with a diameter that’s about 15 centimetres taller than the artist.

Silks, trapeze and aerial hoop performances will be part of the evening as well, which begins at 7 p.m. .. Link to the full length article
