‘The Final Farewell’ Showcases Ringling Bros. Circus’ Last Days

In a new documentary titled The Final Farewell  about Ringling Bros., CEO Kenneth Feld is purported to have said “Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will reappear, and it will be quite different. It will set the standard for the time and for the future.”

The documentary about the circus’ closing show after 146 years airs Monday on AXS TV

It’s been two years now since Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus held its final show after 146 years. But its impact can still be felt today — arguably nowhere more than Sarasota, the circus’ longtime winter headquarters.

“All There Is — A Circus Story,” which premiered at Sarasota Film Festival last month, chronicles the circus’ future through the lens of local circus performers and historians. Now another documentary takes a more national look, focusing on Ringling Bros.

“Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus: The Final Farewell” airs 8 p.m. Monday, May 27, on AXS TV. The roughly 90-minute documentary, presented in partnership with the circus’ Ellenton-based owners Feld Entertainment, offers a behind-the-scenes look of its last tour and in particular its final, May 21, 2017, performance at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

AXS TV’s programming largely consists of concert specials, and “The Final Farewell” follows a similar format, showing footage of various acts at the Uniondale show alongside talking-head interviews with the circus performers. Those showcased include animal trainer couple Alexander and Katie Lacey, clown Davis Vassallo and Johnathan Lee Iverson, Ringling Bros.′ first African-American ringmaster and the one to host its final show…
