Applications Now Open for Frequent Flyers® Aerial Dance Professional Training Program

Frequent Flyers®, the first aerial dance school approved and regulated by the Colorado Department of Higher Education’s Private Occupational School Board, is now accepting applications for its August 2023-May 2024 program! Keep reading to learn about the unique opportunities it offers.

The Frequent Flyers® program is a transformative nine-month journey, based in beautiful Boulder, CO, designed for aerial dancers aspiring to professional careers in this unique, creative field. It provides the well-rounded training and skills that students need to pursue a variety of career paths and to be highly marketable in this ever-growing and competitive arena.

We sat down with Laura Burgamy, the company’s Marketing Coordinator since 2015, to learn more about this unique program that attracts students from all over the world. Laura herself is an alumnus of the Frequent Flyers Professional Training Program and Professional Company, which she attended after completing her BFA in Dance Performance from the University of Georgia. Although she hasn’t stopped dancing in the air since 2008, she has, over the past decade, shifted her focus toward providing marketing support for numerous aerial projects and working as a marketing consultant with solo aerial and dance performing artists and instructors; performance, education, and fitness companies; and others outside the industry.

CircusTalk (CT): To whom do you recommend this program?

Laura Burgamy (LB): The ideal candidate is not only passionate about the discipline of aerial dance, but is also open to a wide variety of movement approaches and desires to be artistically and technically challenged. Successful candidates already possess a solid foundation in a dance or movement discipline and have studied more than one aerial apparatus.

Candidates that come motivated to put their full energy into this program and establish their career direction tend to achieve the most success with it. We do not recommend this program to candidates that wish to specialize in one specific apparatus, as our curriculum is designed to create versatile performers that possess a high level of skill on many apparatuses.

CT: Tell us a little bit about the structure and the curriculum.

LB: Our well-rounded curriculum prepares aerial dance artists for a wide variety of aerial career trajectories, expands their creative potential, and provides them with the tools to keep their bodies healthy and flying! The pillars of our curriculum include:

  • Aerial Dance Technique: Fabric, Lyra, Low Flying Trapeze, Rope, Sling, Static Trapeze, and more!
  • Aerial Dance Creation: Performance, Choreography, Improvisation, Invention
  • Career Preparation: Portfolio Building, Marketing, Rigging, Budgeting, Career Pathways, and more!
  • Health & Wellness: Kinesiology, Individual Body Assessments, Conditioning, Flexibility, Somatic Practices, Injury Prevention, and more!
  • Independent Study: An Open Gym with dedicated space and equipment for each student to work towards their individual goals

Over the nine months of the program, each student will create a solo piece and other original work for the culminating showcase, performed for the public in May. The performance will take place in a professional theater setting at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder. Students will receive professional photos and video of their work that can be used for self-promotion and marketing to help them jump-start their careers!

CT: What makes Frequent Flyers® unique in aerial dance training?

LB: Frequent Flyers® has been pioneering Aerial Dance in Boulder since 1988. Our training technique goes beyond aerial skill acquisition—we focus on the process of transforming aerial skills into an artistic expression that integrates ground-based movement and aerials. Our teachers—all accomplished aerial artists in their own rights— will offer students strong training with safety, technique, and creativity in mind. Couple our staff’s aerial training experience with their diverse backgrounds in a wide variety of disciplines, including somatic practices, traditional circus, and many types of dance, and students are sure to leave the Frequent Flyers® program with a wealth of knowledge pertinent to a variety of aerial pursuits.

CT: What are the opportunities for your graduates?

LB: Our graduates are able to perform on a myriad of aerial apparatus, choreograph compelling work, and contribute to the next generation of aerial dance innovation! Some of our alumni have gone on to become the founders, directors, and managers of aerial schools and companies; nationally touring aerial instructors; aerial choreographers; and successful fitness industry leaders. Many of them also work as professional gig artists, performing nationally and internationally, while finding jobs with resident shows such as La Reve in Las Vegas, or the Mysterious Circus in San Antonio, TX.
