Australian Financial Woes Will Not Affect NZ Buskers Festival, Organisers Say

The Australian parent company behind the Bread & Circus – World Buskers Festival has gone into liquidation, but organisers say the collapse will not affect the January event in Christchurch.

Australian events company Strut & Fret​, which has created hit shows and festivals around the world in its more than 20 years in business, went into liquidation on October 15 after the Covid-19 pandemic led to a series of cancelled events.

The company’s founding director, Scott Maidment, was appointed to run Christchurch’s World Buskers Festival in 2018.

Maidment said the liquidation of his Australian company would not affect Christchurch’s event, which is scheduled to be held in January.

He said the Christchurch festival was delivered by a separate Strut and Fret​ company based in New Zealand.

“The entity that does Bread & Circus is a New Zealand company that is totally different to the Australian company,’’ he said.

“It has got nothing to do with what is happening in Australia … All the finances are totally separate.”

He said the contract to deliver the World Buskers Festival in 2021 was between tourism and marketing agency ChristchurchNZ and the NZ Events and Festivals Charitable Trust, of which he was a trustee…
