Murray Raine — Puppet Comedian

Hailing from Australia, Murray Raine is an accomplished puppet comedian. Raine and his puppets are versed in theatre, cabaret, television, and cruise performance. You may know him from his family show, It’s Raining Puppets, or his adult-friendly, It’s Vegas On A String! Two-time recipient of the “Australian Specialty Act of the Year” award, Raine maintains a league of star-studded marionettes.

The puppets themselves range in size, style, and persona. They depict clowns, koalas, show girls, and everything in between. Some even glow in the dark. While the puppets are all very different, they do have one thing in common: they’re sure to provide laughs.

When asked what draws him to puppetry, Murray Raine answered “I was 6 years old when I first saw a live marionette show at my school. It was sensational. I went home that day and told my parents ‘I know what I want to be when I grow up…a puppeteer!’ Puppetry is a part of me, it is a passion, it is who I am. I have been very lucky to have made a lifelong career out of doing what I love. The beauty in puppetry is creating another world from my imagination and asking the audience to join in the fun.”

We asked Raine how he expresses so many different personas on stage, to which he responded “I never really know what the persona of each puppet is going to be until I begin to design and build it. Each puppet takes months to create and very often they don’t show their individual personality until the final stringing. No two marionettes are alike. They all have their own certain style and quirkiness. Their choreography and movement is meticulously rehearsed over weeks and months and through experimentation, I discover who they are.”
