Dance and Contemporary Circus Merge in New Master’s Course

A new MA in dance and contemporary circus has been launched, billed as the first course of its kind in the UK.

The MA has been created by dance organisation Deda and the University of Derby, and is intended to reflect the “growing trend” within the dance and contemporary circus sectors of artists exploring and merging each other’s practices.

There will be 15 to 20 places on the course, with the cost estimated to be £7,000. It will be based at Deda’s premises in Derby, and is set to begin in September 2019.

The MA will include study of narrative development and dramaturgy, as well as training in developing commissions, gaining funding and health and safety.

Chief executive and artistic director of Deda Stephen Munn said: “At Deda we have been working with both dance and contemporary circus companies, and what we have noticed more and more is that artists are breaking the mould and creating a hybrid form of the two disciplines.

“It’s really exciting, and it’s all about narrative development – it’s not just how do you get out of one trick and into the next.”
