Stressful, Humiliating and Exhilarating – What It’s Like to Be a Circus Performer

Tensions are running high in the venue as the circus theatre students prepare for their upcoming show.

Circomedia, based in Portland Square, have students known for providing high-quality cabaret featuring comedy, aerial, acrobatics, burlesque and juggling along with graceful and innovative live music from their resident musical maestro.

This time, the circus performers are preparing for their final show of the year through a selection of choreography delivered in true Circomedia style.

The show aims to present an interactive tale of cabaret while captivating the audience through contemporary dance.

But, with all the allure of circus performing comes hard work and determination.

Seb Smart, 19, is a BTEC circus-theatre education student and moved from Scotland to study the course here in Bristol. Initially, he didn’t have the intention to go into circus performing, but after attending a few classes, his teacher encouraged him to pursue it as a career.

Him and his peers have been working tirelessly in the run up to the show. He described the time scale in which they have to prepare as “stressful”, as well as the competitive nature of the sport.
