From Wirth’s to Circus Oz, Melbourne’s Art Centre is Still Home for Australia’s Greatest Circus Troupes

What began as equestrian events in the 1860’s led to travelling troupes of performers and exotic animals which became known as The Circus.

Melbourne’s most famous was Wirth’s Circus located on the site of the Arts Centre.

It makes sense that a collection of circus history is now housed in the centre’s Australian Performing Arts Collection.

Curator Margaret Marshall joins Jacinta Parsons for a brief history of the greatest show on earth.
