Meet Ellie Dubois — The Force Behind The Award-Winning No Show

Director and artist Ellie Dubois’s show No Show  won a Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year. Circus Talk’s editor Kim Campbell had the chance to talk to her about the show, her career, and the unique challenges of being a female making art in the circus world. Fortunately, Ellie is excited to take on these challenges, and part of what makes her work so compelling and authentic is her willingness to face some central problem she is struggling with head on. Congratulations to the cast and crew of No Show for the award and we wish them a happy tour.

“I am not interested in circus for the sake of circus.” – Ellie Dubois

Ellie is a performer and performance maker living on the West coast of Scotland. She graduated from The National Centre for Circus Arts where she specialized in straps and prior to that graduated from The Contemporary Performance Practice Course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She makes work that is a coming together of her two practices.

Most recently she took No Show, a new work exploring our expectations of female circus performers to Summerhall at the Edinburgh Fringe Festivalwhere it was critically acclaimed, won a Herald Angel Award and was nominated for a Total Theatre Award. The show will tour the UK in 2018.

She is about to take Ringside on its first international trip to Auch and Subtopia. And she is developing two new shows; Little Top, a circus show for 0-2s and an untitled project exploring risk and failure using juggling. We await these new works with anticipation!
