The Karlsruhe Cultural Center Tollhaus has founded an academy for contemporary circus. The center is converting an old slaughterhouse, with renovations scheduled to be completed by 2018. “The academy is to be a meeting place for international artists from the area of the new circus- a mixture of theater and acrobatics,” said Britta Velhagen, Managing Director of Tollhaus.
This year they will also host the 2nd annual ATOLL-Festival of Contemporary Circus. By hosting over 136,000 guests at 289 cultural events last year, Tollhaus was able to stay afloat. However, only 18,000 visitors came to their annual music event, the Zeltival, which was significantly less than the organizers had expected.
