Nik Wallenda to Join the Big Apple Circus

The Big Apple Circus is planning on flying high again.

Nik Wallenda, the high-wire artist who represents the seventh generation of the famed Flying Wallendas, will be the new headliner of the circus when it returns to the stage later this year.

The Big Apple Circus, nearly a four-decade fixture on the New York scene until financial troubles forced it to stop performing, is attempting a comeback under new ownership. Florida-based Compass Partners LLC, a private investment firm, acquired the circus assetsfor $1.3 million through a bankruptcy auction last month and is now setting plans for the season ahead through its Big Top Works affiliate.

In addition to signing Mr. Wallenda, whose feats include walks over Niagara Falls and a Grand Canyon gorge, Big Top Works says it is returning next season to Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park, home for the Big Apple Circus for many years, on Oct. 26-Jan. 7. A national tour will follow, company officials say.
