In episode 7, I speak to Jean-Paul Richard, the founder of  TANGIBLE performance. As a freestyle ski coach for many years, Jean-Paul has accumulated a wealth of experience affording him a global vision of human performance. He lived and worked in Sweden, five years, where he participated in developing programs of excellence for coaches and athletes. He then led the Swedish National Mogul Ski Team at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. He implemented a coaching approach designed to create wellness and performance environments. Following his Olympic successes, Jean-Paul became manager of team services at the Canadian Olympic Committee and also worked at Cirque du Soleil, where he held various management positions and worked as an executive coach and facilitator, developing skills and coaching managers in leadership and change management. We discuss his philosophy on compassionate coaching and his love of sharing his expertise, experience and passion by teaching motivational skills and the principles of committed leadership.

Show notes:

Frame of reference – Self determination theory

Developments in the field of motivation have questioned the effectiveness of extrinsic rewards as motivators and research has revealed leaders can achieve superior and sustained motivational outcomes by adopting supportive interpersonal approaches and creating a positive climate for their team members. (Deci et al., 2017

Personal power vs. power from position

How you can develop your awareness about new power bases to get the best for your people. (JP Richard)

As a coach, move towards leadership by putting your expertise and talents at the service of a cause. By creating a healthy environment, focused on the qualities of relationships. (French & Raven)

Compassionate leadership, in coaching

Compassion involves noticing another’s need, empathizing, and acting to enhance their well-being.

According to recent research, compassionate coaching will lead to desired change, better health and well-being. Compassionate coaching invokes a psychophysiological state that allows a person to be open to new possibilities and learning. (Boyatzis et al.)
