Women’s Own Circus Empowers Performers to Have Fun and Appreciate Their Bodies

For two decades, members of this women’s circus have been working together, developing shows within a supportive community environment.

Now a Wollongong Art Gallery exhibition, celebrating 20 years of the not-for-profit physical theatre and circus organisation, draws attention to these energetic women and the politics that motivate them.

Emma Baselier and Lisa Sterling, both relatively new to the Illawarra, joined Circus WOW in January 2021.

The women, who moved from the city to the region, are the latest members to join a long line of women searching for good company, creative opportunities, and authentic fun.

Walking around the WOW! What Stories We Tell exhibition left them feeling both excited and slightly trepidatious about their future in the circus industry.

“I am so new. I didn’t know anything about Circus WOW until recently, but I am totally on board now, and I’m looking forward to performing,” Sterling said.

“Everybody is so different in so many different ways, so it’s a lovely space and very inspiring to be around so many strong women in different ways, shapes and forms…”
