Wake Up Call for Inclusion 06 – Microaggressions in the Performing Arts and Its Impact on Creation and the Workplace
This is the 6th episode is of the series called Wake Up Call for Inclusion. In previous episodes, we have talked to artists, managers, authors, historians, and psychologists about the different forms of institutional barriers and biases in the circus industry. This episode will be around the topic of microaggressions, the silent, repeated and often times subtle and unconscious discrimination against members of a marginalized group. Do microaggressions exist in the circus industry? How can we recognize it and prevent it? What effect do microaggressions have on artists and creators? What is the responsibility of allyship? Although mircoragressions are often used towards a variety of marginalized populations and genders, this panel discussion focuses mainly on racially-based microagressions. Johnathan Lee Iverson talks transparently and openly about this still “taboo” topic with his distinguished guests.
