Circus Historical Society Convention Calls for Presentation Proposals for Its 2024 Convention

The Circus Historical Society is gearing up to host its 2024 Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, promising a captivating array of presentations, discussions, and performances that delve into the rich tapestry of circus history.

Scheduled to take place at the Marriott Northeast/Emory University Area hotel from Sunday, August 4, through Wednesday, August 7, this year’s convention promises to be an unforgettable experience for circus enthusiasts and historians alike.

Kicking off with a special meeting with the First of Mays, the convention will commence with a lively reception at 5:00 PM on Sunday, August 4, and will conclude after the exciting auction at 9:30 PM on Wednesday, August 7. Throughout the convention, attendees can look forward to engaging presentations and panel discussions spanning Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The highlight of the event will be the banquet at noon on Tuesday, followed by an awe-inspiring performance of the spectacular Circus Vazquez on Tuesday evening!

CHS Members and their guests have the opportunity to register at the Early Bird rate of $200 per person until April 1, 2024. For non-members, the Early Bird rate of $260 per person includes a one-year membership and subscription to Bandwagon. After April 1st, additional fees will apply. Academic attendees can register at the full-time Academic rate of $150, while students can avail themselves of the full-time Student rate of $125. Registration fees cover admittance to all presentation sessions, as well as the reception, banquet, circus performance, and auction.

The Circus Historical Society is currently inviting proposals for presentations at the convention on any subject related to circus history. Individual papers or presentations should be limited to 25 minutes, including questions, while panel/group presentations should be limited to 45 minutes, including questions. All presentations must be delivered in person, with no Zoom presentations accepted.

Presenters are required to register for the convention and cover their own travel and lodging expenses. Discounted registration fees are available for CHS members, as well as full-time academics and students. Presenters will also have the opportunity to sell and sign their books during the convention at no charge and to discuss publishing opportunities with Bandwagon: The Journal of the Circus Historical Society.

Proposals for presentations will be accepted until March 31, offering an exciting opportunity for circus historians and enthusiasts to share their insights and research with fellow attendees.
